The Position of Pons and Cerebellar Tonsil from Foramen Magnum by Magnetic Resonance Imaging

We attempted to determine normal position of the pons and the cerebellar tonsil from baseline of the basion and the opisthion in Koreans: We measured those lengths on T1-weghed mid-sagittal magnetic resonance images in 40 norma Koreans (18 males
&
22
females).
The mean length of lower end of the pons was 16.8±2.5mm(17.1±2.8mm in male, 16.5±2.3mm in female), and lower end of the cerebellar tonsil was 2.6±2.2mm(2.3±2.3mm in male, 2.9±2.0mm in female).
These analyses are useful for determining normal position of the pons and the cerebellar tonsil, and grading of brain atrophy, mass effect tonsillar ectopia.
